Nicknamed ‘The Glamazon’, 28-year-old New Yorker Beth Phoenix is a rising star in the WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment). The former Women’s Champion recently won a coveted Slammy Award for Diva of the Year, and agreed not to hurt us while we had a chat…
INTERVIEW: CAMERON MURRAY
Congratulations on the Slammy Award! What does it mean to you?
Being named the No. 1 Diva in the WWE is an unbelievable feeling. It was really cool because I watched the Slammys as a kid and my favourite wrestler was Owen Hart, who used to refer to himself as ‘the Slammy Award-winning Owen Hart’. So it was pretty special for me to be standing there accepting my own Slammy 10 years later.
How did you get into wrestling?
My grandmother got me into it, funnily enough. She’s Polish and growing up it was all about [former WWE wrestler] Ivan Putski because he was the representative of immigrant Polish people who came to this country and lived the American Dream. He was the catalyst for getting her into wrestling, and she passed it on to me.
Who’s your favourite fellow Diva?
Each Diva brings something different to the table, and I’ve had some knock-down, drag-out brawls with most of the girls. The one Diva who’s eluded me is Natalia Neidhart. She’s another very powerful Diva, and she’s got an incredible wrestling background. I think that’s a WrestleMania match in the making.
What do you tell people who think pro wrestling is totally fake?
Wrestling has become so much larger than life; it’s an athletic form of drama. That’s the way I look at it. What we do is very real because we connect with people’s emotions and take them on a rollercoaster ride.
How often do you train?
I work out four to six days a week, but it can be difficult to find gyms when you’re on the road. Consistent weight training is important – I bench press 215lb [98kg] and lift 200lb [91kg].
Yeah, us too. Ahem. Have you sustained any major injuries?
It’s mainly bumps and bruises, but I’ve broken fingers and once broke my jaw – I had to get two steel plates and nine screws put in.
Ouch! What’s your signature move?
The Glam Slam*. No-one’s got up from that – it’s an effective move. The aim of the game is to mess up their face!
Finally, how would you like to be remembered?
I’d like to be remembered as the WWE Diva that raised the bar and became a role model.
* An elevated double chickenwing wheelbarrow facebuster, if you must know.
