WHEN the two men behind the reinvigoration of British TV series Dr Who decided to turn their attention to Sherlock Holmes there was plenty of buzz amongst fans. Mark Gattiss and Stephen Moffatt had done great work in translating a hammy 1970s time travel series into a pop culture phenomenon that is a culturally relevant as it is cleverly written. The decision to relocate Holmes to a 21st century setting proved successful with the three episode series debut in 2010 proving a hit in the UK, USA and Australia.

In his modern incarnation, Sherlock Holmes (Benedict Cumberbatch) is a high functioning sociopath and unofficial private investigator whose constant goading of police procedures and announcements of missed clues sees him employed, occasionally and mostly unwillingly, by Scotland Yard detective inspector Lestrade (Rupert Graves).

Episode one introduces Dr John Watson (Martin Freeman) to the prickly Holmes as a potential housemate, as Watson is a recently repatriated veteran of the War on Terror. Watson’s counsellor encourages him to keep a journal in order to sort through his post traumatic stress, instead Watson begins a blog charting the exploits of his new roommate Sherlock Holmes and a star is born.

Seasons One and Two see the two amateur detectives investigate classic Sir Arthur Conan Doyle stories, reimagined: ‘A Study in Pink’, ‘The Blind Banker’, ‘The Great Game’; and ‘A Scandal in Belgravia’, ‘The Hounds of the Baskerville’, and ‘The Reichenbach Fall’. Special features include: ‘Pilot – Sherlock - A Study in Pink’; ‘Unlocking Sherlock – The Making of Sherlock Uncovered’; and audio commentaries.

Sherlock: Complete Series One & Two (BBC) is available now on DVD.
