THE MOVIES

THE RAID:

IN the heart of Jakarta’s slums,  a run-down apartment block has captured the attention of the police. The building’s innocuous exterior hides a multi-level safe house and a thriving community made up of the world’s most dangerous killers and gangsters. Until now, the building has been considered untouchable by even the bravest of law enforcement.

Cloaked under the cover of pre-dawn darkness, an elite infiltration team converges on the safe house with orders to shut it down and arrest the notorious drug lord in charge.

But when their cover is blown and news of their assault reaches the man at the top, all exits are blocked and the cops are surrounded.

Stranded on the 6th floor with no way out, the unit must fight their way through the city’s most violent offenders to survive…

Showcasing an unadulterated mix of impossible gunplay, frantic knife fighting and a masterful display of Silat (the indigenous Indonesian martial art) courtesy of up and coming action star, Iko Uwais, The Raid marks a triumphant return to the glorious, over-the-top action unleashed in the works of seminal Asian cinema filmmakers such as John Woo (The Killer, Hard Boiled) and Tsui Hark (Iron Monkey, Once Upon a Time in China).

Released to universal acclaim in Australian cinemas in February 2012, The Raid is the second major Indonesian feature film from Welsh-born director, Gareth Evans, and has already been green-lit for a Hollywood remake and a 2013 sequel, entitled Berendal.

Evans’ debut Indonesian feature film, Merantau—which also stars Iko Uwais in his first major role —is available now on DVD ($24.95srp), Blu-Ray ($34.95srp) and digital platforms.

MERANTAU:

In Minangkabau, West Sumatera, Yuda a skilled practitioner of Silat Harimau is in the final preparations to begin his “Merantau” a century’s old rites-of-passage to be carried out by the community’s young men that will see him leave the comforts of his idyllic farming village and make a name for himself in the bustling city of Jakarta.

After a series of setbacks leave Yuda homeless and uncertain about his new future, a chance encounter results in him defending the orphaned Astri from becoming the latest victim of a European human trafficking ring led by the wildly psychotic, Ratger and his right-hand man Lars.

With Ratger injured in the mêlée and seeking both his “merchandise” and bloody retribution, Yuda’s introduction to this bustling city is a baptism of fire as he is forced to go on the run with Astri and her younger brother Adit as all the pimps and gangsters that inhabit the night hound the streets chasing their every step.

With escape seemingly beyond their grasp, Yuda has no choice but to face his attackers in an adrenaline charged, jaw-dropping finale.
