JUST when you thought it was safe to open a news site—this just to hand: climate boffins claim that not only ice-caps are suffering from rapidly rising temperatures, but so is the quality our beer, and it will only get worse from here.
Czech climatologist Martin Mozny claims that a rise in air temperature has reduced the flavor-giving acidity of Saaz hops, a key ingredient in pilsner lager. “It’s not just Czech hops that are at stake here, says Francesco Tubiello, a crop specialist at the European Commission, and a lead author of the agriculture chapter of the IPCC Fourth Assessment Report. “The famous hop-growing regions of eastern Germany and central Slovakia face the same situation.” Hoarding ‘essentials’ has never been more urgent…
