Porn pushed anal sex out of the closet nearly 20 years ago, but that doesn’t mean we talk about at the pub—or does it? Story: Humphrey Snorts

Up the bum. Though the back door. Up the poo chute. In the rear end. Whichever way you want to call it, having a bit of the naughty stuff has long been the raunchier option for hot-blooded gung-hoers the world over— if for no other reason than to give the lady something more than your average slap and tickle. And why not? The Greeks did it. So did the Romans. And there’s nothing in the Bible that outlaws it. Some even argue that there are certain passages that encourage the idea (such as The Book of Lamentations 2:10 – “The virgins of Jerusalem have bowed their heads to the ground”). Even the Koran does not strictly forbid a man and his lady from exploring the option (although that does depend on how you interpret it, of course).

The boom in anal in the wider world owes its success, as always, to the wonderful world of porn. Before guys and gals could get seriously enticed and inspired by the DVD-video market, anal joy was a lot harder to find, let alone bring up in casual conversation. Sure, 1970s movie gem Deep Throat gave it the thumbs up, classic flicks Straw Dogs and Once Upon a Time in America heavily suggested it, and most recently, Mickey Rourke’s character in The Wrestler went gang-busters with the bottom in the ladies room, with a trailer-park blonde—a scene the actor proudly acknowledged during his Golden Globe speech earlier this year).

But while the female anus may be an open door for some, for many it remains forbidden treasure, a right of passage that must be earned. Or, as I discovered, a symbol of power that men wield over women when given the chance. At least, that’s what the professionals tell me.

Porn star Angelina Armani explains: “Anal sex is ‘naughty’. It’s ‘taboo’. And fucking a girl’s ass is not just intimate; it’s an act of domination. I know when I want anal sex; I want that feeling [of being dominated]. There is something particularly special about a nice round ass that demands to be violated.”

She adds: “Anal sex is an exciting feeling. It’s like riding a bicycle, going on Space Mountain and eating chocolate covered strawberries all at once. My legs quiver, my heart beats faster and even though I feel like I’m getting split in half, it’s the best part of my day.”

Being a novice, I begin to think that I am green beyond belief. French porn goddess, Katsuni, offers further explanation to my unworldly ears: “Anal is mental pleasure,” she says. “The idea that it’s not to make babies but just to fuck that excites me a lot. There’s something wild, animal about anal sex—especially when you like being submissive. The second thing is pleasure. It’s really good.”

When I offer this tidbit to the sumptuous Stoya, she agrees, saying she also doesn’t mind anal one bit. However, she is quick to point out, it could simply be down to trying something else. “Anal sex can be arousing for a multitude of reasons, or just another hole, when I’m bored with getting my pussy fucked.”

Having discovered porn stars to be so free and open with their love of anal—and with more than 25 per cent of couples now reportedly giving it a good whack—I wonder why it is that I don’t feel I can talk about it in the canteen, by the water cooler or when filling up the car?

To rip the veil off this ancient delight, I head out into the field to ask how accessible it is to pay for the privilege. My first port of call: Tiffany’s in Sydney’s Surry Hills—arguably the centre of the Harbour City’s sizeable sex industry. The ladies tell me: “We know men really like it because it’s a bit naughty, but usually girls won’t offer it, even  now.”

Nearby, a Black Cat spokeswoman says: “It’s a very specialised service. We have only one girl who will do it—and you must discuss it one-on-one. But it’s likely to be an extra $100 or $150, at least.”

The Site at Parramatta, The Golden Apple at Potts Point, and Allure at Annandale all tell me the same thing: “Sorry, there are just not that many girls who will do it on request”.
