WAVVES
Self-titled
FAT POSSUM/SHOCK
IF THE Beach Boys, Weezer and No Age had a garage jam, this could be the result.
While the indie zines are gushing about San Diego one-man-band Nathan Daniel William’s grip on the zeitgeist, all you really need to know is that the album is chock-full of crisp and zesty summer anthems mainlined from childhood memories of dad washing the car in the drive on a Sunday arvo and modernised via super-fuzz and lof-fi imaginings.
Think sunburn, sand and summers when all you had on your mind was that one special girl. Highlights include ‘California Goth’, ‘Wavves’ and ‘Lover’.
Wavves is original, feel-good, and the holiday CD of choice for the young and sexy.
Old Crow Medicine Show
SHOCK
FORMED in Harrisonburg, Virginia in 1998, old-time country/bluegrass outfit Old Crow Medicine Show quickly gained a cult following, thanks to their combination of traditional songwriting style and high-energy live shows.
This great DVD features O.C.M.S. at their frenetic best during two performances over consecutive nights in 2008, the first at the Orange Peel in Asheville, North Carolina, and the second at the much larger Tennessee Theatre in Knoxville. Led by the charismatic Ketch Secor, the multi-talented band is in fine form, and it’s obvious that they’re having as much fun as the audience. The no-frills disc includes 20 songs, with party starters such as ‘Tell It to Me’ and ‘Humdinger’ to mellow tracks such as the group’s signature tune, ‘Wagon Wheel’.
Now open up and take your Medicine; it’s good for what ails ya!
