Enter the extravagant and seductive world of burlesque with 2003 Pet of the Year, Rachel St James
What can we expect from the show, Rachel?
You can expect a completely decadent evening, complete with elaborate, custom-made costumes and props. We have an international lounge singer named Denis Sheridan, a couple of very clever magicians, and my signature act that ends with my famous ‘champagne glass’ routine.
How long have you been interested in burlesque?
I’ve been a professional showgirl for a long time. In fact, I’ve done the ‘champagne glass’ routine since my Pet of the Year tour in 2003. There’s been a big renaissance in burlesque in the past five years. Artistically, I think I’ve found myself.
What are your inspirations?
Growing up, I loved vintage movies and stars like Marilyn Monroe, Betty Grable and Vivien Leigh, so I guess it’s 50s Hollywood glamour mixed with classic Parisian cabaret.
Do you still get recognised as a past Pet of the Year?
You get those diehard fans who will always remember. I’m very proud of my association with Australian Penthouse. Being Pet of the Year was a fantastic experience, and terrific training for what I’m doing now.
