Watchguard Wireless B&W Video Surveillance System
(www.watchguardalarms.com.au) $159
For the most basic of home security set-ups, this Watchguard system does away with luxuries such as remote monitoring, PC link-up capabilities—even colour! Available at Dick Smith stores, $159 gets you everything you need in a beginner, stand-alone system: two surveillance cameras with audio and night-vision plus a black-and-white monitor. An easy-to-install system offering good, basic coverage.
Logitech Outdoor Video Security Master
(www.logitech.com) $649.95
Boasting an ambitious 15-minute set-up time, you can always rely on Logitech to produce a user-friendly product. This system is totally wireless, eliminating unsightly and confusing cables, and allows you to add up to six cameras, both inside and outside the house. Where this system gets really smart is when you’re not around. You can sign up for text and email alerts when the motion sensors are activated, plus remote Internet access to view what the cameras
are picking up in real time.
D-Link D-Life DHA-390
(www.dlink.com) $315
D-Link have a reputation for creating solid, easy-to-install, Internet-enabled systems, and the DHA-390 is a perfect example. Simply connect the system to power and your wireless router and you’re up and running. You can manage your cameras over the Internet and even maintain visual when your PC is off. The audio is excellent, with voice being picked up from 15 metres during our test. It’s also a flexible system; should you need to expand, you can purchase the DHA-310 Internet Surveillance Camera Expansion Kit for $250, which is just as simple to install.
Swann Communications 8 Channel Security Recorder Kit
(www.swannsecurity.com) $1999
With almost 40 showroom and sales centres across Australia (all listed online), Swann Security is a good bet if you prefer face-to-face advice before making a decision. We’re featuring the deluxe system, but there are plenty of cheaper options in the Swann range. The biggest advantage of the 8 Channel Security Recorder Kit is its amazing night-vision capability, which allows you to see images clearly in the dark up to 15 metres away. The system also has a ‘set & forget’ setting so you can record on all eight cameras for 15 consecutive days. It’s not cheap, but it’s worth it.
THE PEN IS MIGHTIER…
You’ll feel like James Bond with Swann Security’s new PenCam Mini Video Camera & Recorder! With 2GB of built-in memory for recording video and audio, it’s so cool it’d even make Q jealous.
Available from www.swannsecurity.com for $139.
