Reviews: Gadget – Schick Hydro 5 Power Select razor
by Suzan Ryan on May.03, 2012, under Reviews
THE Schick Hydro 5 Power Select is the kind of razor you’d expect to see in a James Bond film, or any movie prefaced with the text ‘In the not so distant future’. I’ve been using this razor for the last week and it stands up well next to my regular razor: the Gillette M3 Power (which will be the basis of my comparisons for this review).
To be honest, out of the box, I was sceptical of the Schick Hydro razor simply because of the blade count. My M3 Power is already packing three blades, while the Hydro boasts five. I’ve always been of the belief that any more than three blades is laughable overkill. But if the Schick Hydro is anything to go by, my assumption was wrong.
The three vibration settings—low, medium and high—allowed me to alter the intensity of the vibrating razor to dictate how close a shave I wanted. This was particularly useful for switching from shaving the thinner hair on my cheeks to shaping my beard on my jaw line. The LED screen is a nice addition for indicating battery life, but the power indicator is a negligible addition because it really doesn’t take long to learn the feel of the three vibration settings.
In combination with the provided Schick Skin Protect Shave Gel, I enjoyed many smooth and irritation-free shaving experiences. There was an absence of the shaving rash that I sometimes get when shaving with the M3 Power, and the clever skin guards on top of each blade ensured that I didn’t cut myself on those days when I was rushing to finish my shave and get out the door.
There’s a sneaky flip trimmer stored beneath the gel reservoir that enables an even closer shave for grooming purposes. Perhaps best of all, though, the head is incredibly easy to keep clean, and remains free of smaller hairs that tend to get stuck between multi-blade razors.
If you’re in the market for a new razor or are looking to upgrade to a satisfyingly close shave, the Schick Hydro 5 Power Select is an excellent choice.
Feature: Nazis in space – The story behind Iron Sky
by Suzan Ryan on May.02, 2012, under Features
A new sci-fi film, Iron Sky, plays on an old legend that the Nazis had plans to explore space. David Robinson tells the tale of Wernher von Braun, who later helped put men on the moon and was a member of the German Society for Space travel. He also speaks with scientists and experts, investigating a murky world of rockets, rumours, and flying saucers, to try and find evidence to support this fanciful version of history. Reviews: Film – American Pie: Reunion
by Suzan Ryan on Apr.18, 2012, under Reviews, Web Exclusives

Stars: Jason Biggs, Chris Klein, Thomas Ian Nichols, Seann William Scott, Eddie Kaye Thomas
Universal Pictures
IT has been over a dozen years since moviegoers tasted their first slice of American Pie, the flick that helped reinvigorate the ailing teen comedy genre. With a rawer edge and often embarrassingly honest look at the trails and tribulations of a crew of four best mates attempting to lose their virginity it was a surprise hit garnering several sequels with the core cast.
With each attempt to regain its former glory the franchise’s focus moved further and further away from the four lads (and Stifler), instead concentrating on their lady counterparts. Each iteration led to a drop in popularity, production values and box office earnings with the last few offerings the direct to DVD variety.
You could be forgiven for walking into American Pie: Reunion with low expectations. Hapless lead Jim (Jason Biggs) has made the transition over the series from frustrated virgin to horny college student to doting husband. Thankfully the film forgoes the often painfully unfunny transition into fatherhood and instead goes back to its roots as the group gear up for their high school reunion.
The old school chemistry between Jim, now superstar sportscaster Oz (Klein), house husband Kevin (Nicholas), misfit Finch (Thomas) and holding on to the glory days Stifler (Scott) still works with each of the crew slipping into their roles like a comfy old pair of shoes. Jim still manages to get himself into all manner of awkward situations, Oz is still looking for love, Kevin is still trying to find his place in life, Finch is still cultivating the man of mystery persona and Stifler is, well, Stifler.
With the focus squarely on the five friends hilarity ensues with some priceless moments, as always, coming from Eugene Levy as Jim’s Dad. It hits all the right notes and surprisingly is almost as funny as the original film. The hotness factor has increased exponentially with the addition of Katrina Bowden and Dania Ramirez as well as newcomer Ali Cobrin to the fold as well as some absolutely spot on cameos from franchise regulars including a magnificent porn moustache adorned John Cho reprising his role as one of the “MILF” guys.
American Pie: Reunion will make you laugh out loud, drop your jaw in shock, dry retch at its grossness, shake your head in disbelief and still somehow manages to have its own sense of charm, much like the original. Who says you can’t revisit the glory days? The boys are back.
American Pie: Reunion is in cinemas now
